Korean Fashion: Wooyoungmi
Woyoungmi is a high-end menswear brand that’s been serving up designer fashions in South Korea since 2002. It’s also the name of the woman who founded the company.
Woo Youngmi became the first menswear ready-to-wear female designer in Korea when she launched the men’s fashion brand Solid Homme in 1988. Over the course of the next decade she was joined by her sister, Woo Janghee, and created an event that paved the way for today’s Seoul Fashion Week. Then, in 2002, she launched her eponymous label Wooyoungmi and began showing at Paris Fashion Week.
In 2011 Wooyoungmi became a full member of the French fashion association La Chambre Syndicale.
Woo Youngmi’s father’s influence is clear in her work. Pieces from Wooyoungmi are inspired by architecture and the unique ways that field of design can intersect with fashion. Clothes from Wooyoungmi are three-dimensional structures created from flat surfaces, made with interesting textures and a playful attitude towards structure and sizing.
In a world dominated by men designing for other men, Wooyoungmi stands out by offering a female perspective. Wooyoungmi’s detail-oriented menswear is both masculine and sensitive in its aesthetic, offering an unbiased view on men’s fashion. Everything is sophisticated, delicate, precise, and designed to “break the routine of modern living.”
